UTERUS FOR DESIGN

Biennale de design graphique de Chaumont 2023
Selected project

For this competition I wanted to make something that shows an important piece of my life: my study. In 2020 I started my first study in a new city. I moved to Zwolle.

"Despite there being ups and downs, the academy feels like the womb for me as a designer in this big world."

I have learned and improved so much. For this project I photographed important places at the academy like the wood and metal workplaces, the graphic workshop, the typesetting workspace, the storage drawers, the vending machine and toilets. With all these collected pieces I put together a poster series. These posters were then translated to a small size. The ArtEZ Academy feels so small and cosy. You get to know a lot of people and everybody is there with the same goal: to improve. To improve ourselves  and to improve the world around us. This is why the book had to be small.

The book is all cut and bound by hand.

With the theme “who are you?”, I thought about my development and my positioning as a designer in this world. I am defined by my movement and growth. My urge to create and improve which is made possible by the workshops at the academy.

Graphics workshop

Part of the book is about the graphic workshop. This might be my favorite place to be. A nice workspace with good music. As soon as you walk through the old hospital elevator (unfortunately not in use anymore) you smell the fresh ink and paper.

Wood and metal workshop

There is also a part about the wood, metal and plastic workshops. I have always been very fascinated by the graphic design of instructions and

warning signs. I selected a few of my favorites for the book. We have a lot of implements and tools to work with. You can keep experimenting with the endless

possibilities. The 3D printer is next on my list to try out.

24Hours

The last 24HOURS was the first time during my study

that it was possible because of covid. It was an amazing experience. I spend the whole 24H making posters with riso printing. The goals was to make a poster every hour. This in one of my many works from that memorable day. It felt empowering to really feel that creating energy at the academy. It was a very bonding time. Everyone was so open and helpful. We where working as a team on all of these different outcomes. 24Hours is an international art academy event. 24 hours student produce a lot of work in small time-slots with every hour new topics. It's a great way to connect with each other and with yourself.

Toilets

Before ArtEZ moved into this building it used to be a hospital. All the old signs like the operation room are still hanging. The old lift for hospital beds is now the entrance to the graphics workshop. Even the toilets

look old school. Students spend an average 30 minutes per day on the toilet. There are A LOT of toilets in this building. Each with very different looks, views and feels. It is a place for a break. Sometimes you have to look closely but you’ll find a lot of art and good wisdom in the toilets of ArtEZ
